NEW PROJECT – 20TH CENTURY TOWNSHIP DIRECTORY

The Delaware County History published in 1880 contained biographical sketches of the settlers and those who came to Harlem Township in the early 19th century. In 1910 a county directory was published with additional sketches of the more important later 19th century residents. Nothing has been done since 1910, which means we've missed having a record of people in the community in the 20th century – Jim and Ruth Taylor (Taylor's store), Don and Irma Paul (Paul's Marine), George and Grace Dell (Camp Fire Girls), Hoyt and Louise McElwee, Frances and Bus Fravel, the Pipers, the Garees, the Ogdens, the Wurms, the Flings, the Richardsons ... plus those of you who are reading this.In 2012, the Harlem Township Heritage, Inc. plans to put together and make available a collection of information about 20th century community members, families who lived in the township between 1900 and 2000.

Each family (defined as one household, children living in a separate house from the parents would be a different family) residing in the township or who has resided in the township, if interested in participating, will be "given" one black and white, front and back page on which to tell about their family in words, genealogical trees, and/or pictures (of them, their house, their farm, etc). Families can add additional pages for $5.00 each and/or upgrade their page, front and back, to color for $5.00 (an additional color page would be $10.00). Books will be printed on three hole punched paper with a looseleaf binding to allow for additions after the first collection is published. Update pages/sections will probably be done in years after 2012.

Orders will be taken for copies of the book during this coming year with the intention of having the book (first volume) completed by August 18, 2012. The cost of the book when finished will be entirely dependent on the number of pages/number of color pages. If there are updates after 2012, update sections will be at an additional cost.

Pages will also be available for anyone interested in putting together information about 20th century families who are no longer in the community – families that moved away (Radekins, etc.), parents that have died, etc. Please make sure the book compilers know who you plan to work on so there is not duplication.

Preparation of the pages in electronic (computer) format, (MS Word or Powerpoint) is preferred, but hardcopy submissions from families without computer capability are acceptable. Submissions need to be on/for standard 8-1/2" x 11" paper with a 1" margin on all sides. Submissions of pages for the 2012 directory must be completed and turned in by Friday, June 1, 2012.

For questions contact Vicki Tieche, or call 740-965-4535, or Diana Robertson's office at harlemroadchurch.org or 740-965-4543 (but remember, this is a work phone number). Information will be available at Harlem Township Heritage, Inc. functions.

HARLEM TOWNSHIP HISTORIC HOMES DIRECTORY & WALKING TOUR

Every house that existed in Harlem Township in 1950 (and a few more recent) has history that shouldn't be lost and that others in the community or even genealogical researchers who live far away would like to know about. In 2012, the Harlem Township Harlem Township Heritage, Inc. would like to put together a booklet about the historic houses (and outbuildings and other features) in the township. Two formats are planned, one standard 8-1/2" x 11" size with complete information and a smaller version with only a small amount of information that can be carried while walking or riding a bike.

Everyone who lives in a pre-1950 vintage house is requested to submit information and pictures (current and older) of their house. What we hope to have in the book is: Where the house is located, address, current owner, when it was first built and by whom, unusual details, manners of construction, when and what types of remodeling/additions have been done to the original house, Who first owned the land the house is on (not a U.S. President; the next owner/grantee), who has owned the house and the years they owned it, if the house has been used for purposes other than as a residence (doctor's office, etc.), if there were outbuildings around the house, what types of buildings and where their location in relation to the house (include wells and cisterns -- sketched or other maps of the house and property are fine), any stories about the house, pictures of the house and outbuildings (both old photos and current ones).

Information can also be submitted for houses that no longer exist. Buildings which are not houses can also be included, e.g., old barns or sheds where the house has been replaced with a new one, churches, schools, etc. Non-buildings of historic significance can also be included, e.g., mill pond, ice pond, Duncan's Glen, quarries, etc.

All submissions for this project need to be submitted to the project coordinator, Diana Robertson, by June 1, 2012. For questions or additional information, contact Diana at her office at harlemroadchurch.org, 740-965-4543 ((remember, this is a work phone number). Alternate contact, Vicki Tieche, or call 740-965-4535. Books will be available about August 18, 2012. Price will be determined by page count. Submission forms will be available at all Harlem Township Heritage, Inc. functions and are available online by clicking here.
